Facebook Group Opposses Cuts in Education

I stumbled across a Facebook Group,  Say “NO”to Sen. Don Balfour’s Plan to INCREASE College Tuition in Georgia! There is a link to it HERE.

I tried to submit a comment on Facebook, but for some reason it wouldn’t post.  Maybe it was too long…  So I had to post it here, and just link the facebook comment to this page.  So without further ado… here’s what I think about the aforementioned Facebook Group:

**************************************************

OK, I’ll admit it.  I just joined this group to be able to comment on the self-centered, entitleist, “group think” comments posted here.  A bit of constructive dissension and alternative viewpoint is healthy, so I’m here to add some health to this dialogue.

Any time that an institution or group of people come to be viewed as such a sacred cow that they think they don’t have to share in the pain of a down economy…it is time for a change.  Why do educators and students think that they are such a special group of people that they should be able to merrily go along their way with no discomfort while others are bearing financial hardship?  People’s houses are being foreclosed on, people are losing their jobs, and those that still have jobs are seeing their hours cutback, and their pay reduced…but hey, the spoiled rotten, snot-nosed ranks of academia start a facebook group complaining that their freebies may be reduced a little…and 5,000 + people join!  Why shouldn’t some educators be laid off?  The company that I work for laid off 6% of it’s work force a few months back.

As a matter of fact, where do educators and students get off feeling entitled to their paychecks and low cost education, anyhow…even in prosperous times?  Every government dollar that goes to pay an educator’s paycheck or to subsidize a student’s education comes from somebody who earned it and gave it up in taxes.  Who are you to say you deserve it?  What right do you have to the money other people earned?   Ever think about being a little grateful for what you are getting instead of complaining that you didn’t get more?  Nope, not a chance.  Instead you whine and act indignant that anyone dares not keep giving you your freebies.  Pathetic.

And don’t make any assumptions about me not knowing what I’m talking about.  I’ve got a physics degree from North Georgia College, and an EE from GA Tech.  So I’m no stranger to education.  But I’ve also spent 20+ years in the REAL world after graduating college.  It’s a real world that just handed me a 20%+ pay cut.  It’s a real world in which my house just lost over 20% of it’s value.  It’s a real world where you have to make it on your own instead of fantasizing that money grows on trees.  And it’s a real world where security is an illusion, and people who sit around asking for others to pay their way are left behind.  And people who ask for money in return for nothing are recognized for what they are…beggars.   Go get a job and work your way through college.  It’ll build your character…if you have one.
Balfour is making a courageous stand against selfish, money-grubbing, ingrates that need a severe reality check, and I’m going to make a point to go vote for him the next time he runs for ANYTHING.
